The politics of climate change / Anthony Giddens.

ix, 269 p. : ill., map ; 23 cm.Includes bibliographical references (p. [245]-254) and index.Introduction -- Climate change, risk and danger -- Running out, running down? -- The greens and after -- The track record so far -- A return to planning? -- Technologies and taxes -- The politics of adaptation -- International negotiations, the EU and carbon markets -- The geopolitics of climate change.Since it first appeared, this book has achieved a classic status. Reprinted many times since its publication, it remains the only work that looks in detail at the political issues posed by global warming. This new edition has been thoroughly updated and provides a state-of-the-art discussion of the most formidable challenge humanity faces this century. If climate change goes unchecked, the consequences are likely to be catastrophic for human life on earth. Yet for most people and for many policy-makers too, it tends to be a back-of-the-mind issue. We recognize its importance and even its urgency, but for the most part it is swamped by more immediate concerns. Political action and intervention on local, national and international levels are going to have a decisive effect on whether or not we can limit global warming as well as how we adapt to that already occurring. However, at the moment, argues Giddens, we do not have a systematic politics of climate change. Politics-as-usual won't allow us to deal with the problems we face, while the recipes of the main challenger to orthodox politics, the green movement, are flawed at source. Giddens introduces a range of new concepts and proposals to fill in the gap, and examines in depth the connections between climate change and energy security--Back cover.

Mental health and illness and the social sciences in the twenty-first century / Pia Ringø -- Evaluations as a process of disenfranchisement / Anders Petersen and Rasmus Willig -- Schismogenesis, liminality and public health / Agnes Horvath. The Social Pathologies of Contemporary Civilization explores the nature of contemporary malaises, diseases, illnesses and psychosomatic syndromes, examining the manner in which they are related to cultural pathologies of the social body. Multi-disciplinary in approach, the book is concerned with questions of how these conditions are not only manifest at the level of individual patients' bodies, but also how the social 'bodies politic' are related to the hegemony of reductive biomedical and individual-psychologistic perspectives. Rejecting a reductive, biomedical and individualistic diagnosis of contemporary problems of health and well-being, The Social Pathologies of Contemporary Civilization contends that many such problems are to be understood in the light of radical changes in social structures and institutions, extending to deep crises in our civilization as a whole.

The philosophy of Hebrew scripture : an introduction / Yoram Hazony.

Includes bibliographical references and index.Introduction: beyond reason and revelation -- Pt. I. Reading Hebrew scripture -- The structure of the Hebrew Bible -- What is the purpose of the Hebrew Bible? -- How does the Bible make arguments of a general nature? -- The philosophy of Hebrew scripture: five studies -- The ethics of a shepherd -- The history of Israel, Genesis-kings: a political philosophy -- Jeremiah and the problem of knowing -- Truth and being in Hebrew scripture -- Jerusalem and carthage -- Pt. III. Conclusion -- God's speech after reason and revelation -- Appendix: What is "reason"? Some preliminary remarks. What if the Hebrew Bible wasn't meant to be read as "revelation"? What if it's not really about miracles or the afterlife, but about how to lead our lives in this world? The Philosophy of Hebrew Scripture proposes a new framework for reading the Bible. It shows how biblical authors used narrative and prophetic oratory to advance universal arguments about ethics, political philosophy, and metaphysics. It offers bold new studies of biblical narratives and prophetic poetry, transforming forever our understanding of what the stories of Abel, Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, and David, and the speeches of Isaiah and Jeremiah, were meant to teach. The Philosophy of Hebrew Scripture assumes no belief in God or other religious commitment. It assumes no previous background in Bible. It is free of disciplinary jargon. Open the door to a book you never knew existed. You'll never read the Bible the same way again. -- Publisher description

The exploration of this transformative state is at the very heart of the book. Quinn shows how anyone can enter the fundamental state of leadership by engaging in the eight practices that center on the theme of ever-increasing integrity - reflective action, authentic engagement, appreciative inquiry, grounded vision, adaptive confidence, detached interdependence, responsible freedom, and tough love. After each chapter, Quinn challenges you to assess yourself with respect to each practice and to formulate a strategy for personal growth. "Building the Bridge As You Walk On It" emphasizes that developing leaders is not a simple matter of imparting a set of concepts or reaching into a toolkit of strategies and behaviors. To become a leader requires engagement in the process of deep change in oneself, thereby inviting others to do the same. Once this process is in motion, we truly begin to transform one another to become the type of leaders we strive to be."--BOOK JACKET.

Cities and the shaping of memory in the ancient Near East / Ömür Harmanşah, Brown University.

The land of Aššur: the making of Assyrian landscapes -- 4. City and the festival: monuments, urban space, and spatial narratives -- 5. Upright stones and building stories: architectural technologies and the poetics of urban space -- 6. Cities, place, and desire."This book investigates the founding and building of cities in the ancient Near East. The creation of new cities was imagined as an ideological project or a divine intervention in the political narratives and mythologies of Near Eastern cultures, often masking the complex processes behind the social production of urban space. During the Early Iron Age (ca. 1200-850 BCE), Assyrian and Syro-Hittite rulers developed a highly performative official discourse that revolved around constructing cities, cultivating landscapes, building watercourses, erecting monuments, and initiating public festivals. This volume combs through archaeological, epigraphic, visual, architectural, and environmental evidence to tell the story of a region from the perspective of its spatial practices, landscape history, and architectural technologies. It argues that the cultural processes of the making of urban spaces shape collective memory and identity as well as sites of political performance and state spectacle"-- Provided by publisher.

Claudio Lippi, intervista.jpgINTERVISTA A REALITY & SHOW Non parlate di vacanze estive a Claudio Lippi.

Dovesse chiedermelo qualcuno, direi di no".

Tornando a Domenico Modugno.

Tante parole e pochi fatti...

Compaiono Frizzi, Amadeus, Roberta Lanfranchi..

Typically, they start strong and experience periods of growth, then stagnate and lose members. Since 1991, the North American population has increased by 15 percent while the number of 2unchurched3 people has increased by 92 percent. Large church houses that were filled in the 1950s and 60s now hold a fraction of their capacity. To counter this trend, authors Ed Stetzer and Mike Dodson surveyed 300 churches from across ten different denominations that recently achieved healthy evangelistic growth after a significant season of decline. What they have discovered is an exciting method of congregation reinvigoration that is shared in the new book entitled Comeback Churches. - Publisher.

It presents a systematic theory of cosmopolitanism, explicating its core principles and justifications, and examines the role many of these principles have played in the development of global politics, such as framing the human rights regime. The framework is then used to address some of the most pressing issues of our time: the crisis of financial markets, climate change and the fallout from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. In each case, Held argues that realistic politics is exhausted, and that cosmopolitanism is the new realism. -- Book cover.
